Established in the late 1600s by Quakers, the town of Wayne is rich in history. In 1795, the first real turnpike was created, named Lancaster Pike. This stretch of road extends from the city and continues through the entire Montgomery County. Additionally, railroad tracks between Philadelphia and Harrisburg were built; this railroad line was called the Main Line of Public Works of the State of Pennsylvania, and gave birth to the nick-name “the main line” for Wayne and other surrounding towns. Both the railroad and the turnpike made it possible for businessmen to relocate their families to the rural landscapes of Wayne, away from the city life of Philadelphia.
In the mid 1800’s, George W. Childs and Anthony Drexel bought a plot of land and named it ‘Wayne East’ after General Anthony Wayne. But this was not the only building project underway in the town; plans for an opera house, a Presbyterian church and a hotel were completed, all located on Lancaster Pike. Businesses, churches and families flooded to the area due to its convenient location, beautiful scenery and quaint charm, and Wayne’s economy and community boomed.
Since its conception in the 1600s, Wayne, PA has been considered one of the best places on the main line to live and raise a family. No matter what your passion, Wayne has something for everyone; golf courses, the Anthony Wayne movie theater, parks, libraries, colleges, shopping centers, restaurants and entertainment are ubiquitous. Nationally ranked schools, a low crime rate, and high average income are just a few of the perks of living in Wayne’s warm, inviting community.
